Workshop:
CBCA Sun Project: Shadow Judging: Fostering young readers’ opinions and engagement through the illumination of children’s literature.
So what is it?
The CBCA Sun Project: Shadow Judging establishes a new landmark on the Children’s Book Week calendar where young readers award their winners from the CBCA Shortlist and their voice is heard. The Shadowers’ Choice Awards is announced and celebrated with all the winners at the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.
So why should this happen?
Children’s literature plays a unique role in our culture. It has the power to shine a light on our
world, speaking directly to our young. This project helps them to imagine, think critically and creatively--
and provides a new nationwide platform to embed young voices into the literary awards conversation. CBCA recommends the added value of a creator visit to this.
This project builds literary appreciation and knowledge in a community context. Connecting kids, books and creatives, while strengthening young voices, develops a greater self-concept and empathy for diverse opinion.
Did you know?
Children who experience an author visit are more likely to enjoy reading more widely and are twice as
likely to read above the level for their age. Young people absorb culture best while in groups sharing the experience.
This program helps to embed a reading culture. Come and learn how CBCA NSW Branch can assist you to participate in CBCA Shadow Judging and the benefits to your students and community.
